How to Get Your Preschooler to be More Independent in the Morning:

Updated: Feb 17, 2023

If you want your preschooler to be more independent, it’s important to give them lots of opportunities to take on age-appropriate tasks on their own. Start by working together, such as having your child dress on their own or put away their toys while you're picking up other things. From there, encourage your preschooler to complete simple tasks independently like feeding themselves breakfast or brushing their teeth.

As they continue to tackle daily activities solo, offer recognition and praise - this will not only boost their self-esteem but also motivate them further towards independence.

Getting your preschooler to become more independent in the morning can be a challenge, but it doesn't have to be! With a few simple steps, you can help your child become more self-sufficient and ready to take on the day. Additionally, give your little one choices when completing tasks (e.g., which book do you want to read?). With patience and practice over time, they’ll be real independent dynamos!

Start by setting a consistent morning routine. This will help your child become familiar with the steps they need to take to get ready for the day. Make sure to include time for breakfast, getting dressed, brushing your teeth, and any other tasks that need to be done.

Next, provide your child with the tools they need to be successful. This could include a step stool to reach the sink, a toothbrush and toothpaste, and clothes that are easy to put on. Monitor their progress closely instead of jumping to rescue them the first instance they goof up.

Finally, give your child the opportunity to practice independence. Allow them to do as much as they can on their own, such as brushing their teeth or getting dressed. If they need help, be there to provide guidance and support.

By following these steps, you can help your preschooler become more independent in the morning. With a consistent routine, the right tools, and plenty of practice, your child will soon be ready to take on the day with confidence!
