How to find a suitable tutor for your child?

Updated: Feb 17, 2023

  • Personalized and focused learning:

You should look for home tutors or home tuition agencies that provide skilled and experienced tutors that give proper attention to one child at a time. Sometimes tutors create a class-like environment to utilize their time and more profits which is not beneficial for students as it defeats the purpose of home tuition.

  • Child’s preferences:

The requirements and preferences of the child should be of utmost priority in selecting the right tutor as the students should be comfortable enough with tutors to raise their queries and doubts confidently to gain the most out of home tuition.

  • Seek testimonials:

Testimonials help you understand the past performance of the tutors, their results, teaching style, and behavior of the tutors or the tutoring agency. Parents/students should ask for testimonials from the tutoring company before confirming their association.

  • Tutor’s background and goodwill:

Before confirming to attend demo classes or during the demo classes, you can ask the tutor about their past experiences in teaching, cross-check their background details, and find out more about their teaching experience, teaching style, and contribution to the academic success of former students.

  • Quality and source of study materials:

Parents should be mindful of the source of study materials and the quality that the tutors are going to provide to their children to help them in their academics. Check if the study material provided is at par with the school curriculum, covers all syllabus topics, and gives extra help to score better.

  • Interpersonal Skills:

Communication and interpersonal skills are very important skills for a successful and efficient in-home tutor. Tutors should be such that the students feel comfortable with them even without the parent’s presence. They are like mentors who will shape their character and personality apart from enhancing their academic performance.

  • Teaching methods & style:

Parents should try to understand different teaching styles and find out what will go well with their children’s requirements. Teaching styles can be Auditory, Tactile, Visual, and Traditional.

Auditory: Auditory tutor encourages students to explain the topics aloud to them as if the student is the tutor. They encourage collaboration and discussion among students to enhance their skills and knowledge.

Tactile: Tactile Tutor believes in innovating and experiments. They apply different tactics and techniques for every lesson. These types of tutors are flexible and keep the learning environment interesting.

Visual: Visual Tutors believe that optical and visual memory is stronger than audible memory, Hence, use mnemonics, acronyms, and color-coded highlighting study materials to teach.

Traditional tutors: These are the tutors that maintain the appropriate environment of learning and teach their lessons appropriately just like in a classroom setting.

  • Sit through demo sessions:

Parents should sit through demo classes to watch how the tutor is teaching and how the child is reacting to their teaching style. Check their teaching style, patience with the child, punctuality, expertise, and communication skills.

  • Initiate regular feedback:

Parents should seek regular feedback from the tutors and children as well to see that the students are receiving the maximum benefit of home tuition.
